We have released the first update (minor) of our new software, USBDeviceShare. USBDeviceShare lets you share USB devices and access them remotely over network (Local Area Network or Internet).

Additions in the new version include :

1. Updated user interface
2. Server UI now minimizes to system tray
3. Bug fixes and stability improvements based on user feedback
4. Updated help documentation

Now you can add comments and bookmarks to captured requests. Comments and bookmarks help to document the captured data. When you open the capture log file later or when you share the file with another developer, the comments and bookmarks which you have added help to analyze and understand the captured data easily.

Right click on any request  to add a comment. Once you have added your comments to a request, place the mouse pointer above the comment icon shown in the first column of the request to view the comment.

Bookmarks can be added either from the right click popup menu or by hitting CTRL + F2. Bookmarked requests are highlighted and can  be easily identified.

The latest released version (v2.3.9.62) of USBTrace includes  Smart Card (CCID) device class decoder.  The decoder will capture, decode and display CCID class specific descriptors, requests and messages.

The software consists of  server and client components. USBDeviceShare server must be installed where devices are locally present. Client must be installed where devices need to be remotely plugged in over network/internet.

Communication device class (CDC) decoder has been released with the latest version (v2.2.7) of USBTrace. Telecommunication and networking devices which fall in to this category can be analyzed using this decoder.  CDC devices include analog modems, ISDN terminal adapters, digital telephones, analog telephones,ADSL modems, cable modems, 10BASE-T Ethernet adapters/hubs, and “Ethernet” cross-over cables.

The decoder will capture, decode and display CDC class specific functional descriptors, communication class interface management element requests and management element notifications.

Version 2.2.6, the first release of this year is packed with the following features:

The ‘Capture directly to File’ feature helps you to capture device traffic directly to a file in your system without updating the GUI. This results in high performance capture sessions (like background capturing). This feature also helps to debug faulty or unstable systems where a system reboot/crash is likely while capturing is in progress.

You can now handle bulk/interrupt/isochronous packets in addition to control packets in your own custom vendor class decoder DLL.

This is expert-class diagnostic software to study USB ports and devices, but demo limitations make an efficient test difficult. USBTrace’s multipane interface logically places data for easy readability and offers a simple way to move and resize panes to user preferences. The Help file serves as both a manual and a quick-study guide. However, an extensive understanding of USB controllers, devices, and drivers is required.

Operating USBTrace is surprisingly easy. Devices or drivers to monitor are chosen using quick check boxes. The click of a button starts capturing data as it is transferred through the selected device. A spreadsheet of data is displayed very quickly, including the time, device, request, status, and other information. It is difficult to test the app over time, though, as the demo stops when a small buffer is filled. During our tests, that took less than 30 seconds. Nevertheless, you can highlight captured data to display additional information. Though most of the data will be unintelligible to all but expert users, it takes just couple of clicks to store data in an HTML, XML, or text file.

While we wished the demo limitation wasn’t as stingy, USBTrace is a rare diagnostic that doesn’t alter your system as it captures data. It’s stable, uses little overhead, and the information it grabs is extensive. Expert users will appreciate the program’s easy operation and informative display.

USBTrace’s filter feature allows you to hide those USB requests in which you are not interested while capturing device traffic. We have enhanced the filter feature in the latest released version of USBTrace, the USB analyzer software for windows.

USBTrace’s filter can now be configured so that only USB requests from selected endpoints are displayed.

The endpoint addresses to be included while capturing must be entered separated by commas. If no endpoint address is specified, endpoint based filtering is disabled and requests from all endpoints are displayed.
